Somtimes We Rock The World And Sometimes The World Rocks Us

Nothing is wasted, nothing is in vain: The seas roll over but the rocks remain. -Herbert, SirA(lan) P(atrick)
c.1949  From an operetta, Tough at the Top, published in My Life and Times (1970), ch.7.

Sometimes, we stand alone. Sometimes, it’s by choice; other times not. It’s possible that we stand alone on principle and don’t follow the crowd. We might distance ourselves because we need time to be alone, to think things through, to reflect about our lives. There are times that we just don’t want to be intruded upon. We might be tired or down on ourselves. We might just be shy and need to be invited and accepted into the fold. We might have been alone so long we’ve started growing moss on our souls. Sometimes, it just takes a bit of dusting off and courage to step back into those once familiar surroundings or to seek a new place to call home.

Sometimes, we feel displaced. We feel like we’ve been picked up and thrown into unfamiliar territory. We don’t fit in. We are uncomfortable. We feel topsy-turvy and out of sorts. We might be in the midst of attempting a new challenge. Or we might be a bit different from those that surround us. We long for the security of home and the warmth of friendship. Sometimes, all it takes is the right environment for our beauty to shine through.

Sometimes, we just want to be among friends. We want to fit in. We want to be accepted. We need companionship. We want to know we are loved and appreciated. Sometimes, we just don’t want to be alone. Somtimes, we need others to help us find our place in the world.

Sometimes, we are the ones holding others up. Sometimes, it takes a couple of us to hold the whole family together. And sometimes, we are the ones being lifted and held above the water. Sometimes, we just pile up and create lovely structures without even trying.

Sometimes, we feel like we’re holding the whole world in place. We feel like nothing can knock us down. We will stop at nothing to shelter those we love from danger. We’re strong enough to secure the mountain and gentle enough to embrace the wind.

Sometimes, we can’t do it alone. We have to work together to keep the storm at bay. We will roll, stack, and mold to form walls to keep unwanted forces out and to keep the fragile from slipping a way. We will hold hands and solidify our forces. Sometimes, teamwork produces staggering results.

Sometimes, we are the mountain. We are stone strong and sitting on top of the world. We provide a place to rest. We nurture the life around us. We rise towards the heavens and lift those within our reach.

Sometimes, we’ve been weathered by life and smoothed by time.  Living has created the lines and grooves that have formed and shaped us.  We’re spread out, cupping and angling at just the right places, and though we may be cracked we’re strong enough to hold it all together. We may even chip off bit by bit, but we remain steady. We like who we’ve become.  We find peace within ourselves and others find comfort with us. Sometimes, the hardest and most seemingly unyielding places are ones of greatest comfort and acquiescence.

  1. My kids are avid fossil hunters and would be knee deep in those rock piles looking for an ancient treasure.

Great photos and message–thanks for sharing.

  2. So often your words remind me of a very deep blue pool – so insightful, coming from the bottomless depths of wisdom.

  3. Ditto Carol…

    Great job!

  4. Wow Suzi, this one I read again….what an awesome posting!!! I Thanks so much for the message and those pics are just wonderful!! Hope you will have a great week my talented friend xxx

  5. Nice Suzi,

I love reading your posts the pictures are great.

  6. My boys and I have always loved rocks. One of my sweetest memories is of giving them each a plastic bucket, and heading down to the lake. They’d bring home their favorites, and we’d put a museum display on for when dad came home.

Rocks always make me think of the beginning of time…

  7. What a beautiful post. Words that I needed at this time. Thank you Suzi. I know God gave you these words. I pray that you have a nice week.

    • Viola, I am glad these words spoke to you today.

  8. Oh, I forgot to say I really do like the pictures that went with this post. I love nature.

  9. Oooo! The rocks in the last photo are so cool. At first I thought you photoshopped them. Did rain and water make them that smooth?

    • This rock is at the waters edge of our river property. It is totally different from all of the other river rock thre. I guess its shape is due to water flowing over it when there have been heavy rains…otherwize, the water doesn’t flow over it.

  10. I do think as we age we come to realize that its ok to be by yourself.

    • Yes Mike, a lot of good realizations come with age. Too bad we didn’t know back then what we know now!

  11. I’ve only commented a couple of times on this series. But know I do enjoy and appreciate the way you have brought together themes. Solid creative stuff. Thanks – Bill

    • Thanks, Bill. Just stuff that rumbles around in my head! Have several churning, but don’t know how many will make it to posting…by the time I get the pictures, the words will have probably moved on!

  13. Lovely post. I just always figured everyone else feels as awkward as I do in most situations. I’ve found that just being able to laugh at yourself is the best way to overcome anything. :)

    • Laughter really is healing…at least it helps me!

  14. Just might have to bookmark this one. I am so ready to rock the world!

  15. Sometimes you make my Mondays feel like Fridays. :-)

  16. Beautiful rocks – especially the last one. I have haf to navigate some rocky paths. I can really appreciate this post.

  19. My son loves rocks. I hope that, as he grows, he comes to see them as you do, as metaphors for strength, steely grace, humility, and rugged memory.

    • I loved collecting rocks as a kid and so did hubby and both our boys did also.

  20. I don’t know how you do it Suzi, but somehow you always find just the words I need to hear for the day and add those amazing pictures of yours as a bonus! Thank you friend :)
