I Even Annoy Myself. Seriously.

small cycle

When I heard this week’s Spin at Sprite’s Keeper, I cringed. I thought there was no way I could do that. After all I suffer from CRS, so the ability for me to remember lines from movies (heck, I usually don’t even remember the movie!) is like zero. While my husband and sons spout off lines all the time, I never have a comeback or at least I didn’t think I quoted any, but I’ll get back to that later.

I use inspirational quotes from famous people all the time. I use them in my writing. I put them as my FaceBook status. But only on rare occasions will I actually spout them out. I wish I could, but I just can’t remember many off the top of my head. I can remember some but don’t know who to credit. Or I might remember quotes from books or a Bible verse. But ask me what book or where in the Bible and I’m at a total loss most of the time.

So, as I was trying to think of terms or phrases that I repeat all the time, my mind drew a total blank. Seriously. I wondered does Sprites’ Keeper not realize I’m half brain dead from raising children? Seriously. Then I realized I use that a lot. Seriously, I do. Then I mentioned this at the dinner table, and the blog post took on a life of it’s own as my family started throwing my words at me. I mean they were knocking me upside my head and shoving them down my throat! Seriously, do I repeat myself that often?

My twenty year old son reminded me of how I many times a day answer with “Well, I reckon”…gosh, you’d think I was a ninety year old woman living in the boonies! Apparently, I answer it to almost everything – Will it work? Are you going to do it? Can I have it? According to him, it’s never ending. I must add that every time I use it to answer him, he retorts with “Well, I declare!” Smarty pants. Seriously, he is! Then he added that I quite often (in response to something he’s done that I’m not thrilled about!) go “You little shit!” Guess I’m not too proud of that one. But, hey, it is what it is. You have to realize this kid (not so much of a kid now) is the ultimate teaser, prankster, and smarty pants. Seriously, he got my best traits. And when he pulls something on me which is quite often, I shout “I’m gonna bop you one”…in fact, I even say it to his friends. And they’re all still waiting after all these years for me to actually do it! Maybe one day I will.

And then Dirt Man added his two cents to the equation. All of these will ring a bell with those of you who are married to people with selective hearing or to spouses who tone you out. These are the things he says I say. And of course, I do say them. All the time. 1. Are you listening to me? (No, he isn’t!) 2. Do you hear me? (No, he doesn’t !)3. You never listen to me?! (In my defense, he doesn’t.) 4. You didn’t hear a word I said! (And he didn’t!) 5. I’ll get to it when I’m ready to get to it! (And yes, indeed I will. Seriously.)

And finally, onto the lines I repeat from movies. I think my favorite and most used are from “Gone with the Wind”. When I am overwhelmed, I quote Scarlett with “I’ll think about that tomorrow.” Which is exactly what I did when I heard this theme. Seriously. And then of course, I quote Rhett as well when I am a little pissed. “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” That of course, is what I wanted to reply after they ganged up on me about my annoying phrases. Lastly, I will leave you with my quote of inspiration for those of you who haven’t done this assignment yet….”You can do it!” And that is from “WaterBoy”. I’ll bet you didn’t know there was an inspiring quote in that movie!

Responses

  1. I loved Water Boy! I did not think anyone else even watched it!

  2. I say those things to my husband frequently. I have learned to not even bother talking to him when he is doing something else. It will only bring frustration.

  3. Oh, I saw Water Boy! (It was filmed around Orlando.) I tend to butcher Star Wars, especially “Use the fork, Luke” since the kid still uses her fingers more at dinner time. :-) You’re linked!

  4. Well, I declare! I like that one, it appears our Southern is showing and I like that too.

An inspiring line from the Waterboy now you pointed out something I didn’t notice :^)

  5. It always amazed me when my kids could quote lines from movies, but then they grew up with videos and I grew up in the dark ages when movies were seen in a movie theater only. I only know the most obvious movie lines.

Even if you said the most prim and proper response to your son, he’d make fun of it, I reckon!

  6. the one movie I seem to quote from the most is Annie Hall…there are so many classic lines I can’t help myself. The other one is Harold and Maude. I love when she tells Harold “That’s wonderful harold..go ahead and love some more”

  7. SIL,Just read your blog on mom and her accident. It made me cry. She is one of the finest people I have ever known. It hurts me because of the hurt I know she still feel. Love BIL

  8. I say “I’m fixin’ to” all the time. So erudite, isn’t it?? But like “y’all,” it’s so ingrained from my childhood that it’s not going anywhere. =>

    • I love this! Those are two more that are so natural I guess no one thought to point those out to me!

  9. Ha! The Waterboy quote cracked me up! I use that one a lot too. “You can do it!” Rob Schneider is so hilarious. Loved him in 50 First Dates.
I also quote from Office Space (heard you’ve been missing a lot of work lately? well I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it), and Joe Dirt (Life’s a garden, you gotta dig it). Gee, at least you had some classics in there. Not sure what my movie quotes say about me. LOL.

  10. I think all my favorite quotes come from SpongeBob. We’re pretty much at that level in this house. :)

  11. Yes, using family quotes to make an impact is a way to get what you desire, it is tricky at times…Happy Wednesday! ;)

    very inspirational post!

  12. good one. :)

we use so many phrases again and again….

  13. Yep, I’ve heard you use the “little shit” line! :) . . . I reckon!

    • Karal, Am I that bad?! I reckon I am!

  14. LOL @ “I’m gonna bop you one!” My grandmother used to threaten my mother and uncles with “I’m going to knock your teeth right down your throat!” When I became an adult, we reminded her of that, and she was so mortified:

“Oh, I just feel awful! What did you all think when I said that???”

My uncle replied, “I used to wonder if they’d go down one at a time or all at once.”

    • Oh, Jan, your uncle’s response cracks me up!

  15. Seriously, love it. I reckon you do use more quotes than you care to remember, you little shit! LOL I do tell hubby all the time that he never listens to me. Seriously!

    • Seriously, I reckon most men never REALLY listen!

  16. reckon – my step-mom says that all the time. Love it.

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
    always a good one.

Nice how the husband unit chimed in with such gems. LOL!

  17. Cute post.

Best movie line, of course is, I’ll be bakk. :)

    • Yes, I forgot about that one…and I do use it!

  18. You did GREAT on this post, SC!

    I LOVE…“Well, I reckon”!!!!

    And also…”You little shit!”

    That’s because I reckon I’m a little shit.

    HAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And don’t ya just LOVE all the great lines from Gone With The Wind?

“I don’t know nothin’ about birthin’ babies, Miss Scarlet!”

She was my favorite character in the movie.

Have a great day, my friend!

    X

    • I love that line, too! Well, I reckon, I’m glad you came by, you little shit. Seriously.

  19. OMG ..I use so many of the same..especially 1-5 Lolol..on an everyday basis…my memory is like yours though..i can write them and ponder them but never come up with them in a quick manner..Im losin it..!!lol..!!

  20. http://jingleyanqiu.wordpress.com/2010/04/16/you-are-perfect-poet-at-week-14-award-announcement/

week 14 the perfect poet award reminder,
    keep rocking! ;)

  21. “You little shit!” LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL My mom used to say this to us kids allllllll the time! I heart you, Suzicate!

  22. I say those same things to my hubby all the time! I think one of the most overused lines in our house is “I’m sorry”, every time someone forgets to do something I’ve asked. I think it’s supposed to magically cure my anger. If I had a nickel…well I’d be rich!

I probably say “Awesome” way too much. But it can be said with enthusiasm, sarcasm, or half hazzardly thrown in when I’m not paying attention!

    Awesome (enthusiastically) post!
    ♥Spot

    • Yep, I use tat one, too. Seriously.

  23. Seriously, I can’t remember lines from movies or if I’ve even seen certain movies. I’m struggling with this week’s Spin and have asked my husband for help.

    I can do it.

    • Yes, you can!

    • You Can do it! LOL

  24. My husband ALWAYS does the “You Can Do It!” from Water Boy with the same accent that the dude in the movie says it in.

  25. Quoting from movies never gets old Suzi! Then again its not something you would remember right away anyhow. But “I reckon…” that could be your slogan.. I’m from the westcoast we don’t talk like that here.

    • I don’t require my friends to talk like Southerners…however, how do you feel about sweet ice tea? That’s when you know you’re in the South!

  26. Such a cute post – YOU can do it! I’ve used that one – not sure if there is an Adam Sandler movie out there that I haven’t seen. ;)

  27. So funny, that we all say things and don’t even realize. I have some I say I know I say, but I bet I could be “knock upside down” with stuff I don’t even realize.

Very nice post. So entertaining . . . .but IS one thing I know I always say about YOU! (‘Cuz you are!)

    • Awe, you’re so sweet.

  28. you can do it…and you did. lol. i might have used rhetts response myself. smiles.

  29. Ummm…that one about nobody ever listening to a word I say? I think I have that one on constant repeat.

  30. I can tell you that “I reckon” (at least the one I had to say) is from Showboat.

I was one of the backwoodsmen who taunted some of the main characters. I only had one line “I reckon” but had to say it at least 4 times during the entire scene. Got to be pretty clever in expressing whatever I was supposed to be thinking through those two words.

    Excellent spin,
